Limited Representation:
Only Pay for the Help You Need

Typically, a client hires an attorney to take the reins and manage all aspects of the client’s case from start to finish. This is known as “full representation.” While some clients find this option optimal for their situation, not every client can afford an attorney to represent them in every aspect of their matter. Even when clients can afford it, not every client wants to spend large sums of money to have an attorney handle every task, answer every communication, fill out every document, be present at every event, etc.

More and more clients are searching for flexibility in access to legal assistance and for control of the legal fees. They want assistance and guidance from an attorney, but they do not want to pay a hefty initial retainer and be represented by an attorney to do anything and everything necessary to complete the legal matter from beginning to end.
Limited Representation refers to the concept of a client retaining an attorney to handle only certain parts of the client’s legal matter.
Limited Representation may be the ideal solution for you if you feel comfortable representing yourself and handling most of the aspects of the matter on your own, corresponding with the other party, etc. You may nonetheless need or wish to benefit from having an attorney as your sounding board: to assist you in strategizing, to help you understand the law, your rights, the consequences of your decisions, to guide you through the process, or to help you prepare Court or mediation documents and to help orient you during the various stages in your matter.
Limited Representation is a cost-effective way to obtain legal services and support from a family law attorney without being represented by an attorney in a traditional sense.
Clients choose Limited Representation for various reasons, but more often for financial reasons. The client is charged for the specific legal service rendered with no obligation to incur any further expense or cost or to continue the attorney-client relationship. The client remains in control of the legal fees but benefits from legal assistance from an attorney.

Not every client is a good candidate for Limited Representation. If you know now that you would not be comfortable going through mediation, a Court hearing, or oral argument on your own and need someone to speak on your behalf, this option is not for you. If you know that you are not comfortable communicating with the other party or the other party's attorney, this option is not for you. If you need an attorney to track the day-to-day of your matter, this option is not for you.
